About DecodeMyBill
DecodeMyBill is a free tool that turns confusing US medical bills into plain English and flags charges worth questioning.
Why this exists
Medical bills are notoriously hard to read, and billing errors are common. People pay charges they can't interpret and never find out a line was duplicated, unbundled, or coded at a higher level than the visit warranted. We translate the codes and the math into language anyone can act on.
How it works
Paste a bill or Explanation of Benefits into the decoder and an AI model reads it, explains each line in plain English, flags common billing problems, and suggests questions to ask. Separately, our code-lookup pages explain individual billing codes one at a time, so you can understand a single charge without sharing a whole bill.
What we are — and aren't
We're a free explanation tool, on your side. We are not doctors, lawyers, medical billers, or your insurer, and nothing here is medical, legal, or billing advice. Always verify against your Explanation of Benefits and contact your provider or insurer for anything you dispute. See our sources & methodology and privacy pages for how this works under the hood.
Who builds this
DecodeMyBill is built and maintained by Justin Feldstein, a software builder and small-business operator who got tired of medical bills that no one could explain. To be clear, he is not a doctor, lawyer, or medical biller — the tool's job is to translate the codes and the math into plain English and point you toward the right questions, with the underlying facts grounded in public CMS and HCPCS data.
