Lab test codes
Blood and urine tests are billed either as individual tests or as bundled “panels” that group several tests under one code. The recurring trap here is unbundling — a panel billed at the same time as its individual component tests, so you're charged twice for the same draw. It's also common to see closely related panels mixed up (a comprehensive vs. a basic metabolic panel, a blood count with vs. without a differential). The codes below explain what each test or panel actually checks, what it usually costs, and the specific double-charge to watch for.
- 36415 Routine blood draw (venipuncture)
- 80048 Basic metabolic panel (BMP)
- 80053 Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP)
- 80061 Lipid panel (cholesterol)
- 81001 Urinalysis with microscope review
- 83036 Hemoglobin A1c (long-term blood sugar)
- 84443 Thyroid test (TSH)
- 85025 Complete blood count (CBC) with differential
- 85027 Complete blood count (CBC) without differential
